In this film analysis essay we will focus on man with a Movie Camera. This assignment asks you to focus on the form, style, and techniques of film making in order to better understand the content and meaning of the film. This type of writing is a basic building block of being able to write about film. I am looking for a very specific approach in this formal analysis. In this silent predecessor to the modern documentary, film-maker Robert J. Flaherty spends one year following the lives of Nanook and his family, Inuits living in the Arctic Circle. Documents one year in the life of Nanook, an Eskimo Inuit , and his family. Describes the trading, hunting, fishing and migrations of a group barely touched by industrial technology. Nanook of the North was widely shown and praised as the first full-length, anthropological documentary in cinematographic history. Nanook, an Eskimo what is now known as an Inuit , his family, and his followers of "Itivimuits" are among the approximately three hundred nomadic people who live in an area roughly the size of England on the eastern shores of Hudson's Bay in a region called Ungava of Canada's north.

He was taken by their traditional survival skills, and found an unexpected spirituality in this northern extreme—a profound cultural grace and dignity in a wickedly unforgiving environment. Flaherty spent years in Canada learning the culture of the Inuit eskimo people there. What makes this story so captivating is that it is presented as more of a drama than a documentary.
