Crime and punishment raskolnikov essay

A little about the essay
Essay Examples. Shakespeares Macbeth and Dostoevskys Crime and Punishment explore the psychological depths of man. These two works examine tragedy as represented through the existential beliefs of many philosophers. Existentialist theory expresses the idea that man can satisfy his own needs, regardless of social codes, if he has the energy and ambition to act. Both Macbeth and Raskolnikov have the ambition to act, but each struggles internally with their actions, frightened of the consequences.

Crime and Punishment and Othello: Comparison and Contrast Essay

Crime and Punishment - My name is Raskolnikov - Words | Help Me

A failed visualization of the Ubermensch initially, there is leagues more depth to the character, not only in a psychological way but in the context of his own creation and purpose in the narrative. Raskolnikov is established as a character with many mental flaws even before he commits his crime. The reader is assaulted with gross details about his surroundings and can infer that a disturbed individual like Raskolnikov is a product of his disturbed surroundings. Such a horrible place has caused Raskolnikov to come to hate life exponentially more.

The Reason of the Murder by Raskolnikov

Raskolnikov moves through several explanations for the motives of his murder, each one contradicting and supplanting the previous one. His first explanation is that he simply wanted to rob the pawnbroker for her money. He then rejects this explanation by recalling that he really did not need or want the money.
A very brief background of Crime and Punishment is in order before I begin my discourse. The main characters are lower middle class, on the brink of poverty, and most show the Russian affection for drink. A young, schooled Russian idealist named Rodion Raskolnikov has been expelled from university and is broke. He contemplates committing the perfect crime to alleviate him from his current downtrodden status. He does not consider his act a crime for two main reasons.
